WHY DEVELOP ELECTRIFICATION STRATEGIES?
There is a growing need to move from existing policy-focused discourse to demonstration at the local level by building capacities of local authorities to develop action plans for electrifying urban mobility in cities. Our project seeks to address the issue of lack of sustained action towards electric mobility - especially in PT and IPT, despite the significant policy and funding push by the national government.
PROJECT GOAL
Enabling cities to move towards a sustainable, affordable and inclusive low carbon future through development of a comprehensive electrification strategy for public transport (PT) and intermediate public transport (IPT) in Indian cities
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
- Electrification of public transport and intermediate public transport at a local level
- Mainstreaming of IPT services, securing livelihoods, and improving safety levels of commuters including women passengers
- Capacity building of the local authorities to sustain actions towards electrification of public transport and IPT electrification
- Facilitating replication and upscaling across other cities of India.
KEY DELIVERABLES
Our project aims to develop a Strategy and Action Plan for electrification of PT/IPT services in Ahmedabad and Mehsana for the year 2026. The outputs would include:
- Baseline Diagnostic Study Report
- Electrification Strategy and Action Plan for public bus in Ahmedabad and IPT in Mehsana
- Creation of stakeholder networks
- Knowledge products and dissemination

- ‘Ready-to-implement’ city-level electrification strategies for PT and IPT systems
- Goes beyond one-off measures
- A decision support framework for cities that takes into account socio-economic parameters along with technical parameters
- Active involvement of women, in consultation process and as part of the workforce
